Around home

All of these pictures were taken from the top of a hill overlooking my brothers' homes.  I would love to have a  house sitting on top of that hill.  The land sold this past summer and I was hoping they would divide it into lots so I could bid on one but it all sold (for nearly $400,000).

Down home pictures

 This was taken just out the road from my younger brother's house.

 The above picture, along with the three below, were taken at my older brother's house. The flowers were absolutely gorgeous.

The picture above and below are where a house that Rose lived in and loved once stood.  As you can see someone burnt it down.

 

 The above house is about 300 to 400 feet from the one that burned and is where my oldest sister was born. My mom and dad lived in that house for a while.  My grandpa and grandma lived in the one that burned when mom and dad lived in the one above.

Tennessee hills

The hills of Tennessee in all their splendor. :)  All of these pictures were taken in the area where Rose and I grew up. Since it's right on the border of TN,KY,VA some pictures show parts of all three states.

This is my last blog on my TN trip.  It just a collection of pictures I uploaded to Google/Picasa.  There may be repeats from my previous blogs.

A morning walk

I got out to go for a couple walks and the first thing I saw was these two cute deer about 150 feet from my brothers house. They heard me coming and run a little and then stopped to see what I was.

On down the railroad is this little house (Rose will recognize it).  I would like to know how many different people  have lived in it in my life time.

A little farther down is this view with the old farm house that was occupied when I was a kid but has been empty for years.

The picture below was taken from the cemetery where my baby brother(born dead) is buried.  I don't know exactly which grave is his since the grave is unmarked.

The picture below shows a little of the Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) campus where my niece works as an admissions counselor.  I actually went there a couple years before I came to Indiana.  It is a small school but has a very beautiful campus.

Old home place

 Of course while in TN I had to walk up to my old home place where I lived until I was 12.  The picture above was along the railroad as I walked.

 Of course you've probably seen this barn before because both Rose and I have shown it before. It gets in worse shape all the time....what a pity.  It is located on the place just before you get to the old home place.

 Both the picture above and all the pictures below were taken at our old home place.  I am always amazed how much all the stuff has grown and filled it.  What used to be a field in now a forest.

Cemetery

These pictures are from the cemetery where my mom and dad are buried.  My older brother and I used to do a lot of work for the people that owned the farm that joins the cemetery so all of us kids were free to roam the farm as we please.  Rose and I both still like to go back to this area and look around even though I don't think Rose made it up there the last time she was down there.  There's a pear tree near the barn shown in one of the pictures so while I was down my brother and I went and got us of of the pears to eat.  It was still as good as I remember it being as a kid.

Home sweet home

I just got back from visiting my brothers in Tennessee (Cumberland Gap area) and thought I would post a few pictures.  It was gorgeous in some areas while the leaves were mostly gone in other areas (very early for down there).

 This was take from the pinnacle in Cumberland Gap National Historical Park.  If you are ever in that area you definitely want to drive up there an take in the view.

 This is a panoramic from the pinnacle.  It shows the whole are and would best be viewed by right clicking the picture and opening it in a new tab/window so you can enlarge it.  If you look closely you can where the road enters the mountain on the Tennessee side. Middlesboro, KY is the town on the right side of the picture and as you can see it still has fog over it.  I'm sure you also noticed that there is foggy areas throughout the whole picture.

 This is a little closer view of Middlesboro, KY. The lake in the picture is Fern Lake and that is where Middlesboro gets their water.

This  is the actual town of Cumberland Gap, TN.  I would speculate that some of the left side of the picture is actually in Virginia.  I don't know exactly where the Tennessee-Virginia line is.

Home sweet home

This is the actual home place where I lived until I was 12 years old. I have many fond memories from that place. If you look at this map you can see where the old home was located.  The picture in the center of the map in a actual picture from there.  Notice how it was really overgrown when I took that pictures.  We killed a rattlesnake or two about every year up there. For some reason they really like that holler.

If you enlarge the picture above you can see the old chimney from the house standing.  When we moved my brother and I (ages 12 and 15) tore down the old house and used the lumber in it to help build a barn at the new place.

This little stream run real close to our barn.  As a kid I loved to play in it, especially when there had been a lot of rain and it was overflowing. The road out of the holler was on the left side of this picture.

Here's a better look at the old chimney.  Notice the vines coming out of the top of the chimney.

This is the fireplace that was in our living room.  I can remember baking potatoes in the fireplace....yummy.

If you were sitting on our front porch this would have been to the left.  The woods is part of Cumberland Gap National Historical Park.  It was our playground when we got a chance to play.  There was a hickory tree that squirrels really liked that we could see from the porch.  I can remember sitting on the porch and seeing a limb shake in that tree(which mean there was a squirrel) and my older brother would grab his shotgun and head out there. Normally, he would bring a squirrel back with him.

Looking to the right this would have been the view.  It was beautiful in the fall when all the leaves were changing.  You can see the road right along the tree line on the left of the picture.

Pinnacle

Here are some more pictures from Tennessee/Kentucky. These were taken from the Pinnacle in Cumberland Gap National Historical Park. Middlesboro, KY is actually under the fog which is pouring through the Cumberland Gap.  The next to last picture shows Middlesboro. The last picture is mostly TN.  You can't actually see the homes where my brothers live but with binoculars you can see the railroad just a little ways from their houses.
