Skagway to Emerald Lake in the Yukon

This is a short blog... It shows a few pictures of our Alaska trip in 2010.  We rented a car in Skagway and drove over into Yukon.  This is our trip and a sampling of pictures. If you will notice, I wrote a little summary of the trip below the map and pictures.

Cool

Since it's so hot I thought I would put up something that looks cook. :)  All these shots are along the Klondike Highway out of Skagway, AK going to Yukon, Canada.  If you ever go on an Alaskan cruise I would definitely recommend this drive.  It was absolutely gorgeous.

Sterling Highway

The first three shots are just after we got off the Seward Highway and on to the Sterling Highway which take you to Kenai.  The last shot is another from along the Sterling Highway.  We were going to Kenai to stay at a B&B that we had stayed at before.  The people running the B&B told us they were not really running a B&B any more but we were welcome to stay there any time we came to Alaska.

Seward Highway

These are just shots from along the Seward Highway in Alaska. Some of them are shot the the road in them just to give a perspective of what you would see while driving down the highway.  I know the road distracts from the beauty but I've always enjoyed pictures that give you a perspective of what it would look like driving down the road. That is one reason I like to get on Google Maps and look at the street view.  If you look at street view down  the Seward  Highway you can get an excellent view of the surrounding area.

Portage glacier

All of these pictures were taken on the Portage Glacier Hwy in AK.  After we left the visitor center the road went a little farther and these are the pictures along that part of the road.  As you can see the weather was good and this was the first time in five trips to the Portage Glacier area that the weather has cooperated. We went the day before I took these pictures and it was foggy and sprinkling.

If you look at the picture above you can see the glacier peaking out of the valley.

Snow

When we were on our cruise to AK one of the stops was in Skagway, AK. One of the attractions there is a train ride into the Yukon. We took the train ride the first cruise we took but decided to rent a car the last time we went. We enjoyed the car ride much better than the the train ride because we could stop when we wanted to and take pictures. :) The train ride was on the Whitehorse Pass Railroad. Below is a video that I found on another blog of them clearing the railroad of snow. I've got a couple of pictures of a snow blower in AK that were diesel powered. Obviously, this snow blower is powered by steam. By the way you can see much better if you go to the full screen mode.

One final post on the AK trip

This is the final post on that AK trip. Here are some more beautiful flowers. We were just out killing time before we had to leave for the airport. What a beautiful way to end the trip.

Alaska flowers...mostly :)

All of the following flower pictures were taken at a botanical garden near Anchorage.  The last picture is a picture of a family tree quilt.  We saw the quilt at a B&B where we were staying.

Lake ???

All these were taken at a lake between Homer and Seward. I don't remember the name of the lake but we've stopped at the lake every time we've gone by it because we've always thought it was beautiful.

Homer area

 Just north of Homer

Just north of Homer.  You can see the Homer spit out in the water on the left side of the picture.

Fisherman returning from their fishing trip.

 Homer, AK... Homer spit.
