Skagway to Emerald Lake in the Yukon

This is a short blog... It shows a few pictures of our Alaska trip in 2010.  We rented a car in Skagway and drove over into Yukon.  This is our trip and a sampling of pictures. If you will notice, I wrote a little summary of the trip below the map and pictures.

Cool

Since it's so hot I thought I would put up something that looks cook. :)  All these shots are along the Klondike Highway out of Skagway, AK going to Yukon, Canada.  If you ever go on an Alaskan cruise I would definitely recommend this drive.  It was absolutely gorgeous.

Sterling Highway

The first three shots are just after we got off the Seward Highway and on to the Sterling Highway which take you to Kenai.  The last shot is another from along the Sterling Highway.  We were going to Kenai to stay at a B&B that we had stayed at before.  The people running the B&B told us they were not really running a B&B any more but we were welcome to stay there any time we came to Alaska.

Seward Highway

These are just shots from along the Seward Highway in Alaska. Some of them are shot the the road in them just to give a perspective of what you would see while driving down the highway.  I know the road distracts from the beauty but I've always enjoyed pictures that give you a perspective of what it would look like driving down the road. That is one reason I like to get on Google Maps and look at the street view.  If you look at street view down  the Seward  Highway you can get an excellent view of the surrounding area.

Glacier ice

The ice at Portage Glacier was so beautiful because of the bluish color. It looks so cold to me yet I think it is beautiful.

Portage glacier

All of these pictures were taken on the Portage Glacier Hwy in AK.  After we left the visitor center the road went a little farther and these are the pictures along that part of the road.  As you can see the weather was good and this was the first time in five trips to the Portage Glacier area that the weather has cooperated. We went the day before I took these pictures and it was foggy and sprinkling.

If you look at the picture above you can see the glacier peaking out of the valley.

Our final leg

These pictures finish our trip. I hope you have enjoyed them. I know I published a lot of pictures because it was hard for me to decide which ones to show. Hopefully these have give you a good idea of what Alaska, an Alaskan cruise, and British Columbia look like. I only published a few of my pictures but I think you should be able to get the general idea. If there are any pictures that you want to know the exact location they were taken please let me know since I geotagged about 95% of them. I will not be able to look at your blogs for the next several days but will try to catch up when I can.

Lake along the way
Another shot of lake
Another lake....note the highway along left side of lake
A waterfall of course
Small church
Thompson River if I recall correctly.  Note railroad on right of picture
Devil's Gulch or something like that.
Our last picture....It was raining so this was taken out the car window.

Wells Gray Provincial Park

All the pictures below are from Wells Gray Provincial Park. There are a bunch of beautiful waterfalls in this park. If you're interested there a few short video clips located here. We thought we were going to get wet a couple times but it never did rain enough to disrupt our plans.

British Columbia

I think you can see this is a beautiful drive. After you leave Vancouver and get farther north and east there's not a lot of traffic so it is a very relaxing drive with lots of beautiful scenery. There was quite a bit of road construction going on but we were never delayed for a long time. Apparently BC has very wet areas and other areas that are very dry. As you can see from looking at the pictures some of them are from the dry area.

As a side note....I've never seen as many freight trains as we saw up there. We were constantly seeing a train hauling freight. We drove along a river (Thompson I believe but I could be wrong) for a long ways and there was a track on each side. From what I observed one track was for going one direction and the other track was used to go the other direction. That almost has to be true because we would see huge trains 30 minutes apart going the same direction.
Waterfall along the way
Seton Lake I believe
Pullover along the road
Another waterfall
Looking back at the road which we have just traveled.
Another waterfall.
Just thought this was kind of pretty with all the clouds.
Not a waterfall but water coming down the mountain.
