Raccoon Mountain

These pictures were taken near Raccoon Mountain in Chattanooga, TN. Raccoon Mountain is a TVA power generating station. The concept behind it is interesting. They have to pump the water to power the turbines to the top of Raccoon Mountain. Of course it takes electricity to run the pumps so they fill the lake on top of the mountain when the demand for electricity is low (for example, in the summer it would probably be filled at night (early morning) when the demand for electricity is low (it would take more than one night to fill it). When the demand for electricity is high they release the water to run the turbines to generate electricity. The way they explained it to us is that the electricity used to pump the water to the reservoir on top of the mountain may cost them 3 cents/kilowatt hour and when the demand for electricity is high they can sell what the power station generates for 10 cents/kilowatt hour so they make a profit of 7 cents/kilowatt hour.

Interesting shots and info.
I'll have to read it again to get the concept:) I don't confess to understand all the "why", but the photos are great.

That IS interesting! I lived near Chattanooga for a year of college, and never saw this place. Wonder why no one took me there!
