Old times
My sister Rose's blog today talks about old times so I thought I'd put up some old pictures. She's probably going to kill me since a couple of the pictures has her in them. :) The top two pictures are from where we were raised as kids. I think Rose lived in that place for around 5 years and I lived there 12. It was a beautiful place and was joined by a national park so there was never a possiblity of someone moving close to us. For some reason rattlesnakes just loved that area. We just about always killed one or two every year....sometimes in the yard. I always thought that it's only by the grace of God that some of us didn't get bit by one of them. When we lived there it was about 2 miles to school and we walked it every day...rain or shine. You could drive a car up to the place if you were careful but you had to drive through a small creek to get there. Our nearest neighbor was around a quarter of a mile away and Rose lived in their house for a while after she had been in Indiana for a while and then went back to Tennessee. If you look carefully at the top picture you can see the top of our neighbor's barn. Rose had that barn (covered with snow) as her header picture for a while.
The next picture down is of our dad, me (I believe), and Rose. Our dad was disabled so we struggled to make it as we were growing up. I'm sure there were times that my mom and dad wondered how we were going to make it. Of course, being kids we didn't have enough sense to know that we were struggling. The bottom picture is Rose...I would guess she's around 2-3.

Now why would I kill you--I was cute back then. LOL
These are just great Neal.. I can tell by reading your posts and them on your Roses blog that you have both got fond memories of those times. You hit on how hard it must have been at times.. but you got through it and look at you both now... The love you have for each other is apparent in many of your posts.
I can only imagine what living in such a place was like. We were poor folk but we were surrounded by many others and it seemed that back then everyone would look out for each other.
Your wealth was the beauty around you... the love of your parents and the wildlife you encounted.
Great pictures and a fantastic post that as me soul searching and reminising my childhood.
For this I thank you.
Tom
