I watched them rebuild this P-38 after they recovered it from Greeland (under 268 feet of ice) where a squadron had landed because they were lost. You can read the entire story of the lost squadron here where they have a lot more photos. Every time I went back to TN I would go see how much progress they had made. I would have loved to see the first flight but unfortunately I wasn't able to make it. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end and the P-38 was sold and is not in Middlesboro any longer. They were talking about flying it to the U.K. where it was headed when the sqaudron got lost. However, I don't know if that is still in the works or whether it was dropped.

I saw a story about this plane and the group on television. The thing that surprised me at the time was how deep down this plane was and how far it had migrated from it original location.

To take something like that a bring it back to better condition than it was when new is remarkable.

Your interest in it and your photography skills are fasinating.

I remember, during World War II, when I was about 9 or 10, that Shredded Wheat biscuits came with a row of biscuits separated by a piece of cardboard and on the cardboard was printed an outline of the P-38. The first us boys had seen and it wasn't long until we were able to draw them using that cereal box picture as a model.

Really enjoyed this post.
