When we were in Alaska I was fascinated with the Alaskan pipeline. For those you that don't know it's an 800 mile long pipeline that starts in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska and ends in Valdez, Ak. If you want to read about it go here.
Notice in the above picture hos the pipe is place on supports so it can slide back and forth on the beam as in contracts and expands when the weather changes. It was also constructed like this to withstand movement in case of an earthquake (Alaska has several per year).
The fins on the poles above are to get rid of the heat when the pipeline is buried.
The above picture is showing where the pipeline crosses a river.
The apparatus above is called a pig. They are sent through the pipe every so often to clean it.
This is the port of Valdez where the pipeline terminates. We had a great time here watching the otters. We also took an 8-hour cruise out to the Columbia Glacier
